Could salt therapy save your marriage?!

Did you know this week is National Stop Snoring Week?

Here’s a few fun facts from the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association you might not be aware of:

  • Over 40% of the UK adult population snore
  • This means there are approx 15 million snorers in the UK, including 10.4 million males and 4.5 million females.
  • A recent survey found that men snore louder than women
  • 58% of snorers are aged between 50-59.

If you are a long-suffering partner of someone who snores you’ve probably googled everything there is to know about snoring. The causes and what you can do (other than suffocating your delightful other half) to help reduce it.

But for those who aren’t in the know, what causes us to snore?

Well, when you fall into a deep sleep the muscles in your mouth, nose and throat relax.

The tissues may relax so much that it can partially block your airways, which causes them to vibrate. The more your airways are blocked, the harder it is for airflow to pass, the more the tissue vibrates and the louder the snore.

Nasal and sinus issues can also be a cause.

Sinus swelling can force people to breathe through their mouth, which can also lead to the sound of snoring being caused by the mouth and throat muscles relaxing, vibrating and creating the snoring sound.

For those whose snoring is caused by nasal issues or blocked and inflammed airways in the nose, did you know that salt therapy might be able to help with this?

During a salt session, the tiny salt particles are breathed in deeply to the back of the nose and throat, also entering your respiratory tract and lungs and also landing on your skin.

Salt is naturally an anti-inflammatory so could help to ease the inflamed airways, making it easier for the air to pass through the nasal passages and thus reducing sound made by snoring.

Any excess mucous which could be also blocking the nose is broken down – as salt is a dehydrant –  thus making it easier to expel and allows for much easier, restful breathing

So claim back your full nights sleep now!
